English Language School

"Arriving in a country without knowing how to speak their language was a great challenge for me. But when I started attending classes with Max, I realized that I would be able to.

My teacher is cheerful, kind, patient, and a very intelligent person. Today I am able to communicate much better and with much more confidence."

WHO WE ARE

Country Homes English Language School is a free adult literacy resource for the international community of Spokane. Our school is made up of volunteers from a variety of different experiences who enjoy working with students from many different cultural and language backgrounds. Our students' backgrounds vary from having no formal education to being college graduates.

WHAT WE DO

Our aim is to meet the needs of the whole person, and we consider social and emotional needs as important as academic goals.

Our volunteer tutors partner with students in their English language journey by creating tailored lessons based on individual needs and goals. Tutors work with students on a one-on-one or small group basis in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

WHO IS INVITED?

Our program is for adults from other nations and cultures who are seeking to improve their English language skills and are resettling or temporarily living in Spokane. All are welcome!

We are always looking for more tutors! All that is required is a knowledge of the English language, willingness to learn, and a sincere desire to help others.

OUR HISTORY

Country Homes English Language School was founded in 1979 to help meet the needs of refugees arriving in Spokane as a result of the Vietnam War. The first students, who were Vietnamese, knew little or no English and had very few resources. These students were provided tutors, nursery care, and transportation to help prepare them for life in the United States.

Over the years, the school has helped hundreds of students from dozens of countries. Many have gone on to college and/or earned U.S. citizenship as a result.

Country Homes English Language School is a vital part of the local ministry of Country Homes Christian Church. Our volunteer tutors are members of our community with a sincere desire to help others.
